Chapter Twelve
We had no choice but to make sure the black vapor below us settled before we took any action. Of course, that meant that the Grounders couldn't roll out a pulse cannon and attack us, either. The weapon was keeping us safe for now, but once the dust settled, all bets were off.
It also meant that I couldn't climb down and communicate with anyone else. I didn't even know if the others were okay. They must have seen the black vapor spreading and figured it out.
And I wanted Matt. He needed to tell me that I'd done the right thing, attacking these not-so-fake Enforcers.
Some of them had been people like this young man, only trying to stay alive and see the next day. Still, a big part of me couldn't forgive them. After all that I had been through, I knew I'd never do something this horrible to another person to save my own life. The scene in the spaceport had proven that to me. Nothing the Grounders could promise me would get me to work for them.
I wouldn't think about the possibility that some of the Enforcers below had done this to protect their own families. The thought was too horrible.
I opened the hatch.
The dust had settled, after several minutes. A black coating covered the entire plaza below, and gatherings of lumps lay underneath it like victims from the Pompeii eruption so many centuries ago.
I would not think about that, either.
So I climbed down the ladder, leaving Blake in the walker. He started to climb down after me, but thought better of it and stayed up. After what Calvin had done, we knew all too well that other humans could be just as vile as the Grounders. We had to guard every walker at all times, no matter what the cost. If one of the Grounders' servants got one of these things, it might be all over.
I eyed the factory as I climbed down, heart racing. I kept the heat gun tucked into my belt, and I'd left the baton with Blake in case he had to fight someone trying to steal the machine. No one came out. There were bay doors that were open, that the Enforcers had poured out of, and several lumps lay inside of that, too. It looked as if the bodies had blocked other Enforcers from closing the doors. Some of the black vapor had gotten into the factory.
The smokestack had also stopped. I tried not to think about what the smoke meant as I jumped onto the ground.
“Tess!” Matt shouted.
He was climbing down from his walker.
“Stay up there!” I shouted. “We can't afford to have someone steal another one of our machines.”
Matt paused halfway down the ladder. “What just happened?”
“We need to shut down this factory. Trust me. That's what happened. Climb back up, and stomp on those bay doors before the Grounders come out with pulse cannons. Make it so they can't get out!”
I thought of the tablet. I knew that Grounders were waiting inside for me.
